(Nasdaq: FCEL) -- a global leader in fuel cell technology – with a purpose of utilizing its proprietary, state-of-the-art fuel cell platforms to enable a world empowered by clean energy – announces multiple project awards by the local Connecticut electric distribution companies, Eversource and United Illuminating, totaling 11.2 megawatts, as part of the state-sponsored Shared Clean Energy Facility program. Each of the four FuelCell Energy power plants to be constructed pursuant to these awards will supply 2.8 megawatts of clean power to the Connecticut electric grid. The clean baseload power generated by each FuelCell Energy 2.8 megawatt platform is enough to power approximately 3,000 homes, or a total of 12,000 homes taking into account all four FuelCell Energy platforms, with continuous clean energy. $8 million funding award to advance the demonstration and commercialization of FuelCell Energy’s solid oxide electrolysis high efficiency hydrogen generation technology DANBURY, Conn., Oct. 09, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FuelCell Energy, Inc. (Nasdaq: FCEL) -- a global leader in fuel cell technology – with a purpose of utilizing its proprietary, state-of-the-art fuel cell platforms to enable a world empowered by clean energy – announces selection by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, in collaboration with the Office of Nuclear Energy, for an $8.0 million funding award to support the design and manufacture of a SureSource electrolysis platform capable of producing of hydrogen. FuelCell Energy has previously demonstrated multi-stack solid oxide power generation systems at both the 50kW and 200kW output levels. This project will be the first multi-stack electrolysis system produced with the Company’s solid oxide technology. The system will be equipped with an option to receive thermal energy, thus increasing the electrolysis electrical efficiency to over 90%. Following the design, manufacture and testing of the system at FuelCell Energy’s Danbury, CT facility, the electrolysis system will be delivered to Idaho National Laboratories (INL), where it will undergo rigorous testing to confirm the electric efficiency, as well as the ability to utilize nuclear power plant waste heat to obtain higher efficiencies of up to 100%. This highly efficient electrolysis platform is expected to provide much needed flexibility to baseload nuclear power generation. Additionally, beyond validating the efficiency performance levels, this demonstration project will accelerate the control schemes and integration design. This project represents a key step in FuelCell Energy’s path to commercialize its high efficiency solid oxide electrolysis technology. The multi-stack module that forms the core of the system is a modular building block easily scalable for larger systems. FuelCell Energy Announces New Carbon Capture Project with Drax Power Station DANBURY, Conn., June 27, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FuelCell Energy, Inc. (Nasdaq: FCEL), a global leader in delivering clean, innovative and affordable fuel cell solutions for the supply, recovery and storage of energy, today announced that it has entered into a contract with Drax Power Station in the United Kingdom for an application of the Company’s carbon capture solution. FuelCell Energy will be supporting Drax with a Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) study evaluating the use of the Company’s propriety carbonate fuel cells to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from Drax’s biomass boilers. Drax Power Station is the largest single-site renewable power generator in the UK. Located near Selby, North Yorkshire, it has a capacity of over 3,900 megawatts of renewable power generation, primarily from sustainable wood pellets sourced from responsibly managed forests. Carbon dioxide linked to the carbon cycle of forests is considered carbon neutral and therefore, carbon capture employed at this project would make the power station carbon negative. Bio-Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) is one of the most promising approaches to carbon reduction because of the ability to be carbon negative at large scales. FuelCell Energy’s carbon capture technology is based on the Company's proprietary carbonate fuel cell power plants, which are able to concentrate CO2 from dilute flue gas streams as a side reaction during power generation. The concentrated CO2 is then available for sequestration or utilization. The FEED study will focus on a system that captures up to 85 tonnes of CO2 per day while generating additional power for the station. The ability to co-produce valuable electricity during carbon capture provides a significant advantage over conventional solvent-based CO2 capture systems that consume both heat and electricity to operate. The fuel cell also destroys up to 70% of NOx emissions from the flue gas. Drax plans to use the CO2 captured within a greenhouse abutting the power station. Potentially any excess CO2 captured could be transported to other greenhouse locations. FCE’s carbonate fuel cell is modular, and this FEED study supports a potential future demonstration project that will utilize two standard fuel cell modules similar to FCE's SureSource3000 commercial power generation system. Once demonstrated, the technology can easily be scaled up to capture a significant portion of the power station’s CO2 output. This initial FEED study will be completed in late 2019, and a detailed design and cost estimate for the demonstration system will be part of the FEED study. While emissions reduction and other environmental benefits are key priorities in the CRIN pilot project, other critical factors include the economic benefits that investment provides for Canada. Currently, technologies in use for carbon capture are expensive and consume significant amounts of energy. The FuelCell Energy solution is able to capture carbon from power plant or boiler flue gasses while producing clean electric power, a revenue stream that reduces the cost of carbon capture.
